Albert Walter (7/4/1857-5/29/1927), was a San Antonio Police Officer sometime around 1900. I know a little basic information about him, but would like to know more, if more is available. When did he serve? Was he on foot or mounted? Are any records of his service available? He was my grandfather’s older brother, and I’ve always been curious about him.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. The picture was found in an old box of my grandfather’s photos, years after his death, so I never got the chance to ask him anything.
Sir, Albert Walter was “elected” as a Police Officer at the City Council Meeting of 3 Feb 1890 as reported in The Daily Light of 4 February, 1890. Albert Walter is also listed in the San Antonio City Directory of 1891 as a Policeman with Badge #38. His residence being located at the corner of Leona and Vera Cruz. He is buried in Castroville. His police career would seem to have been from February 1890 to sometime in 1891 as by the time of the collection of information for the 1892 City Directory, he has returned to his previous vocation as a butcher. Sorry I cannot present you with much more than this, however, “official” records pretty much do not exist for this time period. Thank you so very much for sharing the photograph (almost certainly taken at the studio of Paris and Rothwell), with your permission, I would very much like to include it in the database. F.L.
